In the September issue of Popular Science , reporter Kevin Krajick notes that we are hardly immune to a collision from extra-terrestrial objects. Currently, "there are between one and two millions near-Earth objects (NEOs)—chunks of space rock whose orbits may pass within 30 million miles of Earth—that pose a significant impact threat to the planet." Amateurs and governments alike monitor the skies and, almost daily, discover new NEOs. Nevertheless, the threat of serious damage from these objects, though present, is small. The last significant threat came in 2004 and prompted a terrifying six hours for astronomers before data surfaced showing collision with the Northern Hemisphere was not imminent. Of the NEOs scientists have recorded thus far, the next dangerous one could collide in 2036 and if another large asteroid stays on course for 873 years, there's a 1/300 chance of collision. Scant odds, perhaps, but with dozens of new objects bound to be detected before the end of the year, the numbers have no place to go but up. This proposition will pay out at POP$100 if another near-Earth object with the potential to collide harmfully with the planet at any point in time is discovered and announced by January 1, 2008.
